Case Study

National Parents Organization

National Parents Organization is the national voice for family law reform. It is poised to bring about fundamental change. Opening doors with its simple message of shared parenting and gender equality, with equal rights and responsibilities for fathers and mothers, it is making this the norm and the expectation in every state.

Moving from consultant to its first National Executive Director, from 2012 to 2015, I have built National Parents Organization, leading the organization through drastic change, and accomplishing much of what I have taught to other organizations. I took it from one state, Massachusetts, to being a vital, growing, national organization with thirty states and counting. I have created and implemented the strategy and persuasive communication, including developing the name change and branding that communicates our mission, vision, and core principles.

Under my leadership, National Parents Organization produced a “grade” for every state on where it stands on shared parenting in child custody laws for both temporary and permanent orders. This was the kickoff to our introducing Shared Parenting to Temporary Custody Orders legislation in 2015; to expanding our media; and to increasing our contributions. Along the way, we have received our first 6-figure gifts and we made 2013 and 2014 the highest revenue producing years on record.

Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis

Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis had just begun. It was incorporated and had its IRS Ruling letter. It needed and desired advice on how to establish a full-time, full-range fundraising program to drastically increase its revenue to meet its operating budget established by its strategic plan. The ultimate goal was to prepare the organization and its founder for soliciting and receiving its first $1 million gift.

In the course of 2 years, we created and implemented the foundation for the development program: prospect research program, database, and internal office systems. We set the strategy and developed the compelling message for Accelerated Cure Project to cultivate and receive its first $1 million gift.
